Sheff Wed Faces Serious Challenges, Says Independent Regulator

'Our role is integral to football's future' - independent football regulator the new chairman

Sheffield Wednesday's persistent issues represent a a "serious issue" and the new football authority is aiming to acquire authority to investigate clubs in such situations, its new chair David Kogan has announced.

During an extensive discussion, Kogan, who was recently selected, voiced concern towards Wednesday's fanbase.

The chairman convened with four supporters' associations associated with the Championship side recently.

The football club have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in this season, with the club failing to pay players on time on multiple instances, including in the autumn.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a significant problem for EFL and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.

"Wednesday stands as one of the iconic names for English football and this week we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will permit us to bring the club and similar situations submitted for our review if they require examination and addressed."

Economic Challenges and Ownership Situation

The team's struggling chairman Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be willing to sell up at the stadium, but he has not been able to secure a deal with interested parties.

Failure to pay player wages on time in spring months caused limitations by the league officials in mid-year, blocking the team from conducting any player acquisitions for the following recruitment periods, although that restriction was lifted in the end of the transfer window.

Official's Viewpoint

The regulator explained: "Our role exists to serve the Owls followers, other clubs in similar situations where fans are dedicated to a local institution that has represented their community in numerous instances.

"I have absolute sympathy for Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for every team that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or approached financial ruin, for reasons that have nothing to do with the followers."

When asked if the regulator could force an chairman to relinquish a club if they are considered unfit, the regulator answered: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we collect the information and know what's going on, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that forcing owners to sell clubs would be treated as a "last resort" and the authority would rather to collaborate with owners.

"The last thing what we want to do is commence engagement with an individual club, an individual owner, without being able to work with that chairman to fix the problems affecting the organization and the owner's facing," Kogan said.

"But the truth is, when you look back over the history of football, over the past few decades there have been certain proprietors, not many, but some who have been irresponsible in the approach they have taken toward their organizations and finally refuse to accept accountability for the coming years."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

The chairman convened with officials from numerous teams to detail the scope of the authority recently and stated it constituted a "proactive meeting" with a "significant participation" from the grassroots to elite level.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if errors are made, if the world of football gets it wrong, the remarkable development accomplished might evaporate rapidly," the regulator warned.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the context of the English game is a major achievement - we must maintain momentum.

"There's an enormous amount of money coming into football and has been channeled for the last 20 or 25 years, because there are no assurances it will keep flowing into the sport, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on challenges and obviously, of the coming seasons."

Premier League Concerns

Elite division representatives objected to the establishment of an oversight body because of fears of a negative impact on the top-flight's competitiveness, but the chairman responded: "I'm absolutely committed to the prosperity and expansion as an commercial operation of the Premier League.

"As someone who appreciates the apprehension regarding damaging the Premier League as a premium product of the nation. But concurrently, if you engage with division representatives after the recent gathering, they would have had a substantial amount of confidence -and, in fact, they have been informing us confidentially they have a significant confidence."

Political Connections

Kogan is still facing a "full inquiry" by the official appointments authority after he revealed he contributed money to the opposition group in recent years.

The chairman provided financial support for Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport the politician's campaign, along with that of the government leader.

"I have been entirely transparent regarding my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," the chairman stated.

"I am presently disconnected from any form of political activity."
