A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
